D&C

Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a surgical procedure performed to remove tissue from inside the uterus. They are often performed to diagnose and/or treat such conditions as heavy bleeding. A D&C is also performed to prevent infection after a miscarriage by clearing out any remaining tissue. D&C’s are performed as an outpatient procedure in the hospital under general anesthesia.

Please do not drink or eat anything after midnight prior to the surgery. Plan on having someone drive you home following the procedure.

Patients can expect to experience mild to moderate cramping and/or bleeding following the procedure that may last a few days. An antibiotic or Methergine (medication used to make your uterus stop bleeding) may be prescribed. It is important to follow your doctor’s instructions for taking these medications; and finish all medicines prescribed. Sexual intercourse should be avoided until the bleeding completely subsides. A post-operative appointment should be scheduled for one week following surgery.
