Hormone Therapy

h-patientFor menopause-related symptoms, such as hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness and bone loss, there is no more effective treatment than hormone therapy. Estrogen is the common hormone given for the relief of menopausal symptoms. While it is a fact that estrogen can increase the risk of uterine cancer, estrogen that is given with progestogen significantly decreases that risk. There are also other risks involved with hormone therapy, such as an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, blood clots, breast cancer and gall bladder disease. Because of the potential risks involved, hormone therapy should only be undergone after thorough consideration, and by recommendation of a medical professional. It is usually best only to take enough hormones to relieve the menopausal symptoms, and for as short a time as possible.
